Lil Caezer’s at the tailgate…. A new low for HBCU homecomings…..
Homecoming at HBCUs are an institution. A staple of life on the yard. Countless alumni experienced college life for the first time at this heralded event. Watching the band, cheering for the home team and of course, moseying round the tailgate.
The tailgate is undoubtedly the crown jewel of any HBCU homecoming, which is why the calamity that occurred at Benedict College is all the more puzzling. True tailgaters live by one rule, DON’T RUN OUT OF FOOD. This weekend, not only did the University tailgate run out of food, someone thought it ok to supplement the shortcoming with Hot-n-Readys….
For those not in the know, the Hot-n-Ready is Little Caesars’ option for those in need of a $5 dollar day old pizza. Yes,… that Little Caesars… the pizza chain admired only by Herman Cain and the front office of Godfather’s Pizza. And while Little Caesars bares the responsibility for this failure, Benedict College deserves all the blame.
Just like anything, there are levels to the HBCU homecoming. The food offered at each tent can change every few feet. One mainstay of the HBCU tailgate, however, is an “acceptable standard of care” – a page clearly left out of the Benedict homecoming handbook. One can only hope the powers that be are willing to accept the mistake for what it is and work to correct themselves moving forward.
